How to care for hair extensions at home

We all love a good hair transformation and nothing does the trick quite like a fresh set of hair extensions. If you’re reading this you are probably new to hair extensions, and you’re either thinking about getting extensions installed ( which we strongly recommend that you have installed by a qualified professional) or you currently have hair extensions installed and want to know how to care for your extensions at home.

Alongside your at-home hair care routine, it’s worth noting that your hair extensions will need regular maintenance, as your own hair will grow by approximately 1.5 inches within three months. At House of Hair UK, we recommend maintenance appointments every 4-6 weeks, depending on the application method.

And before your appointment you should have had a consultation where maintenance and care at home were discussed and explained, but if not or you’ve forgotten here are 7 House of Hair UK recommended things to avoid and things you should be doing when caring for your hair extensions at home and as you go about your everyday life.

Alongside your at home hair care routine, your hair extensions will need regular maintenance every 4-6 weeks, depending on the application method.

Things to avoid

    • Avoid Saltwater; as salt is a natural dehydrator and it can cause your hair to become extremely dry, discoloured and/or difficult to manage.
    • Avoid getting your hair wet in swimming pools as the chlorine content in the water will also damage your hair extensions, causing matting and discolouration.
    • Avoid over usage of heated tools where possible as they can cause damage to your hair extensions (and your own hair).
    • Avoid silver shampoos and toners as they can damage your cuticles which will affect the lifespan of your hair extensions.
    • Avoid putting product on the root area when conditioning and thoroughly rinse to avoid build-up

    • Avoid adding colour on hair extensions at home. Avoid towel drying or leaving your hair to air dry as your natural hair may tangle and knot.

Things you should do

    • Wash your hair regularly with House of Hair aftercare products, however excess washing and styling will damage your cuticles and decrease the lifespan of your hair extensions. Washing your hair extensions with your head in an upright position helps prevent tangling.
    • Use sodium and sulphate free hair products when washing your hair as the salt in products along with the salt in tap water could dry both your hair and the hair extensions.
    • Never go to sleep with wet hair; always make sure your extensions are completely dry to avoid tangling. When sleeping, braid your hair extensions which also helps to avoid tangling and prevents the cuticles from rubbing together.

    • Brush all your hair and extensions before washing. Do not flip your head over to wash, instead keep your hair flowing in a natural backward position and wash this way (i.e in the shower, not over a sink)
    • Take care of your hair extensions as you would your own natural hair and remember that like your natural hair, your extensions can be easily damaged.
    • Stick to your routine, such as working out and/or the gym. You can work out daily as your hair extensions will be unaffected by perspiration.

    • Always use a heat protector before adding any heat from blow dryers or styling tools. To restore shine and softness, gently comb through wet hair focusing on mid-lengths and the ends – do this as often as needed

Remember, hair extensions are attached to your natural hair and therefore taking care of your hair is key when it comes to keeping your hairstyle looking like new. That’s why at House of Hair UK, we’ve developed a unique range of care products specially designed for extended hair so that you can enjoy your hair for as long as possible.  Find out more on the House of Hair UK website, until next time.
